From Technical Writing to Tiny Works of Art: Why I Love Creating Wood Earrings

By Kay | Creator of Shining Ember Designs

By day, I'm a technical writer creating training materials for the oil and gas industry. My work requires a lot of concentration, attention to detail, and making complicated information understandable. By the end of the day, my brain is usually pretty well drained!

But when the workday ends, something wonderful happens. I get to switch gears, step away from all that technical stuff, and do something completely different. I get to be creative!

That's one of my favorite things about our small business, Tortuga Hobby Works. It's also how Shining Ember Designs, my very own handmade jewelry brand, came to life!

Shining Ember Designs is my creative corner of Tortuga Hobby Works, where I get to dream up, design, and create original wooden jewelry. Every design starts with an idea, and I love experimenting with shapes, colors, and finishes to turn those ideas into something special.

What began as a creative escape from my technical writing career has become something I truly love sharing with others. And the best part? I get to invite my customers into that creative process, too!

I've been creating my own beaded jewelry for years for me and my friends but once we bought our laser and I found my first set of sparkling paints I was hooked. Creating jewelry gives me the opportunity to play with colors, experiment with designs, and make something beautiful with my own hands. It's my creative escape, and I absolutely love it.

Not Just Another Pair of Earrings

One of the things I love most about our wooden earrings is that the possibilities are practically endless.

Maybe you love a particular design, but wish it were a little smaller. Or perhaps you've found the perfect outfit, but can't find earrings in just the right shade of blue. Maybe you love the earrings but prefer a different style of hardware.

That's where the fun begins!

Because we make our jewelry in-house, there's plenty of room to personalize it. Here are just a few ways we can make a pair of earrings uniquely yours:

  • Size: Love a design but want something a little more subtle? Or perhaps you'd prefer a larger, bolder statement piece? We can adjust the size to suit your style.

  • Paint colors: Our earrings are often finished with beautiful, hand-painted shimmer colors, but you're not limited to what you see online. We can explore different colors and combinations, or leave the wood unpainted so its natural beauty shines through.

  • Hardware: Everyone has their preferences! Whether you like traditional hooks, studs, or lever-back earrings, we offer different hardware options to help you find a comfortable fit.

  • Design: This is my favorite part! If you have an idea for something completely different, I'd love to hear about it. We can work together to turn your vision into a design that's all your own.

And if you'd love a matching pendant to go with your earrings, we can craft that, too!

Go Ahead, Challenge Me!

I genuinely enjoy creating new designs. In fact, some of my favorite creative moments happen when someone comes to me with an idea I haven't tried before.

Maybe it's a favorite flower, a beloved pet, a special occasion, or a design inspired by an outfit. Sometimes a customer knows exactly what they want, and sometimes they just have the beginning of an idea.

Either way, I love the challenge!

There's something incredibly satisfying about taking an idea, figuring out how to make it work, and watching it become a finished piece of jewelry. It might take a little experimenting, a few design adjustments, or trying different paint combinations, but that's part of what makes the process so enjoyable.

Don't be afraid to ask me for something different. I love a good creative challenge!

A Little Wood, a Little Paint, and a Lot of Personality

Wood is such a wonderful material for earrings. It's lightweight, comfortable to wear, and has a natural warmth that I think makes every piece special.

I especially enjoy seeing how a design changes when I add color. Sometimes a soft shimmer brings out the delicate details of a flower or butterfly. Other times, a bold, unexpected color combination gives a design an entirely different personality.

And because wood has its own natural grain and character, even two pairs made from the same design can have subtle differences. That's part of the charm of handmade jewelry.

I don't want our earrings to be just another accessory in your jewelry box. I want them to be something you enjoy wearing, something that makes you smile, and maybe even something that gets people asking, "Where did you get those?"

Let's Create Something Together with Shining Ember Designs!

After a full day of technical writing, nothing makes me happier than getting to use a different part of my brain and bring someone's creative vision to life.

Thank you for supporting our small business and giving me the opportunity to do something I truly enjoy.

I can't wait to see what we can create together!
