1948 U.S. 3-cent "Rough Riders Anniversary" stamp (Scott #973).

Subject: It commemorates the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Rough Riders, the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, which fought in the Spanish-American War.

Design: The stamp features an image of William "Buckey" O'Neill, a Rough Rider, based on a statue by Gutzon Borglum (sculptor of Mount Rushmore).

Issuance: It was issued on October 27, 1948, in Prescott, Arizona, which was the 90th anniversary of Theodore Roosevelt's birth.

Quantity & Color: 53,875,000 stamps were printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing using a rotary press, and the color is violet brown.
