The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Biloxi has a notable history, marked by a significant challenge posed by Hurricane Katrina:
- Construction and Initial Plan: The resort was constructed in 2005 and was originally scheduled to open on September 1, 2005.
- Impact of Hurricane Katrina: Just days before its planned opening, Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast on August 29, 2005, destroying the casino and damaging the resort. The iconic 112-foot-tall guitar sign on the property, however, largely survived the storm's wrath.
- Reconstruction and Opening: Reconstruction of the damaged property was necessary, leading to a delay in the opening. After overcoming a legal dispute, the casino finally opened to the public on June 30, 2007. The hotel officially opened on July 5, 2007.
- Early Entertainment: The opening month featured performances by bands like 3 Doors Down, Kid Rock, Poison, Ratt, and Cheap Trick.
- Ownership Changes: In 2014, Twin River Worldwide Holdings (later Bally's Corporation) bought the property for $250 million, motivated by a desire to diversify geographically. In 2023, Bally's sold the land and buildings to Gaming and Leisure Properties in a leaseback transaction, with Bally's continuing to operate the resort under franchise from Hard Rock International.
The Hard Rock Cafe, located within the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Biloxi, offers a rock 'n' roll-themed dining experience with classic American dishes and live music.
