The history of the Hard Rock Cafe in Las Vegas involves two distinct locations: an original Hard Rock Cafe and the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino
Original Hard Rock Cafe:
- Opened in September 1990 at the corner of Paradise Road and Harmon Avenue.
- Featured an iconic 82-foot-tall, guitar-shaped neon sign.
- This Cafe closed on December 31, 2016, to focus on a newer location at Showcase Mall.
- Its famous guitar sign was eventually disassembled, refurbished, and relocated to The Neon Museum for display in 2019.
Hard Rock Hotel & Casino:
- Opened on March 10, 1995, adjacent to the original Hard Rock Cafe, as the world's first rock and roll-themed hotel.
- It was a joint venture between Hard Rock Cafe founder Peter Morton and Harveys, although Morton later bought out Harveys' share.
- The resort featured a casino, the music venue "The Joint," and a popular pool area.
- It underwent significant renovations and expansions throughout the years, including adding hotel towers and other amenities.
- In 2018, Virgin Hotels and investors purchased the Hard Rock, announcing plans to renovate and rebrand it.
- The Hard Rock Hotel closed on February 3, 2020, to begin this transformation.
- Virgin Hotels Las Vegas opened on March 25, 2021.
Current Hard Rock Presence in Las Vegas:
- There is a Hard Rock Cafe located at 3771 Las Vegas Blvd S #120, which opened in September 2009 in the Showcase Mall.
- Hard Rock International, owned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida, acquired The Mirage Hotel & Casino in December 2021.
- The Mirage closed on July 17, 2024, for a large-scale transformation into a new resort, the Hard Rock Casino Las Vegas and Guitar Hotel, which is expected to open in Spring 2027. This new resort will feature a guitar-shaped hotel tower on the site of the former Mirage volcano.
In summary, the Hard Rock Cafe has a long and evolving history in Las Vegas, with the current presence including the Showcase Mall cafe and the upcoming transformation of The Mirage into a new Hard Rock destination resort.
