Hot Wheels Zamac cars are unpainted die-cast models, featuring the raw metal finish of the Zinc, Aluminum, Magnesium, and Copper (ZAMAC) alloy used to create them. The term "Zamac" was first used in 1998 at a Hot Wheels convention, where limited-edition, unpainted cars were released. Later, Mattel introduced Zamac editions as exclusives, most notably at Walmart, starting in 2013.
Key aspects of Zamac Hot Wheels history:
  • 1998 Convention: The first Zamac Hot Wheels were introduced as convention exclusives, with 25 carded versions, a 4-car set, and a special baggie version.
  • 2004 First Editions:
  • Mattel released Zamac versions of the First Editions as Toys "R" Us exclusives, with some also appearing at Target.
    2013 Walmart Exclusives:
  • Walmart began releasing a series of Zamac mainline cars, initially featuring 18 models.
    Walmart Exclusive Series:
  • This series typically includes unpainted variants of existing Hot Wheels mainline vehicles and is a Walmart exclusive.
    Rarity:
  • Zamac editions are not as common as standard Hot Wheels and are often found in specific case assortments or at particular stores.
    Collector Interest:
  • Zamac cars are popular with collectors due to their unique look and the ability to see the raw metal and tampos (decals) without the base coat.
