Hot Wheels mainline cars, the core of the brand, are the basic, mass-produced die-cast toy cars sold at retail. They are the most affordable and widely available Hot Wheels, often featuring plastic wheels and simpler paint jobs compared to premium or special editions. The mainline series is an ongoing line with new models introduced each year, alongside repainted and rethemed older models.
Key aspects of Hot Wheels mainline history:
  • Inception: Hot Wheels were created by Elliot Handler,         co-founder of Mattel, in 1968, as a response to the success of Matchbox cars.
  • "Sweet 16" (1968):The first 16 Hot Wheels models, known as the "Sweet 16," were introduced with unique designs, including the Custom Camaro and the Deora.
  • "Hot Rod" Influence: Hot Wheels cars were designed to be more like customized "hot rod" cars, with exaggerated features and designs, unlike the more realistic Matchbox cars.
  • Annual Releases: Mattel releases a new mainline series each year, typically featuring 250 different vehicles, including new models and repaints of older ones.
Mainline vs. Premium:
  • Mainline cars are the entry-level, affordable models, while premium versions offer higher quality materials and detailing.
    Collector Focus:
  • While aimed at kids, mainline cars are also popular with collectors, who seek out rare or older models.
